The Hallie Ford Art Scholarship
Was established by Mrs. Ford, who was a Willamette University trustee for many years and a generous benefactor to the University. Recipients of this academic scholarship are chosen by the Art History faculty according to a combination of the following criteria:
- Female Art History major.
- Oregon resident.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Tzvetan Todorov Award for Special Achievement in Art History
Established in 2017, this award intends to celebrate students who have consistently demonstrated a continual growth of their critical skills and methodological awareness in the field of Art History. Rising to the challenges encountered in the different courses, papers, and activities that they have undertaken over the years in the Department of Art History, the recipients of this award have reached very promising and innovative results as young scholars. This is an annual award for one or more senior Art History majors.
The Roger P. Hull Art Museum Award
Was established in 2011 in honor of Roger P. Hull, Professor Emeritus of Art History (1970-2010) and Faculty Curator at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. The award celebrates Prof. Hull’s vision, which led to the establishment of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, as well as his commitment to outstanding exhibition programming and related scholarship. This is an annual award for one or more senior Art History majors. Recipients for this award are chosen by the Art History faculty in consultation with the museum staff according to a combination of the following criteria:
- Outstanding contributions to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in the context of an internship or some other related activity, such as a research or exhibition project.
- Quality of independent work, including creativity and ambition in pursuing museum-related projects.
- Continued involvement and engagement with the Hallie Ford Museum of Art and its exhibitions and programs.
- Professional demeanor and reliability; serving as a role model and leader for other students.
- Expressed interest in a museum-related career.
The Esther Wright Huffman Art Scholarship
Was established by Dr. Norman A. Huffman in memory of his wife, Esther, who taught art at Willamette from 1947 to 1951. It is awarded by the Art History faculty annually to an Art History major in their junior or senior year in good academic standing.
The Joy Lorraine Hayhurst Award
Was established by Joy Hayhurst ‘84 to honor outstanding academic achievement as well as ongoing contribution to and engagement with the Department of Art History for a senior major.
The Erwin Panofsky Research Award
Was established in 2011 to honor students who have explored challenging topics of research and achieved remarkable results in their papers from a critical as well as historical standpoint. This is an annual award for one or more Art History majors or minors. Recipients for this award are chosen by the Art History faculty according to a combination of the following criteria:
- Outstanding quality of a substantial research paper.
- Excellence of work, including scholarly rigor and mastery of interpretive methods.
- Autonomy and consistency throughout the research process.
- Originality of the chosen subject(s) of investigation.
- Richness of language and meta-critical connections.
Departmental Honors
Are awarded at graduation to a small number of outstanding senior Art History majors who have distinguished themselves through the quality of their research and their service to the department. Recipients for this award are chosen by the Art History faculty according to a combination of the following criteria:
- GPA of 3.80 or higher in the Art History major.
- Completion of at least two 300-level courses before receipt of the four-year degree.
- Excellent achievement in the senior thesis.
- Professional demeanor and reliability; serving as a role model and leader for other students.
- Quality of independent work, including creativity and ambition in pursuing Art History-related projects.
- Clear engagement with the department and its activities over the course of the undergraduate degree.
- Potential for future excellence in Art History.
