University of Monterrey (UDEM), Roberto Garza Sada Center for Architecture, Art, and Design; Monterrey, Mexico-PNCA

Overview

Monterrey is the capital of the northeastern state of Nuevo León, Mexico and is  Mexico’s 3rd largest city, number one in per capita income, and home to many international corporations. The University of Monterrey is located in the suburb of San Pedro Garza García which a 2018 study identified as having the best quality of life in Mexico and which Lonely Planet highlights for its “urban hipster nightlife.” Just fifteen minutes by taxi from campus is one of the largest public squares in the world. This square is known as the Macroplaza. It has an interconnected series of parks, trees and fountains surrounded by historical buildings and museums. Nearby residents also enjoy the Santa Lucia Riverwalk and exhibits in the Contemporary Art Museum.

The University of Monterrey was originally founded as a Catholic institution and continues to emphasize the social and humanist development of its students. There are about 16,000 students total including 9,500 undergraduates and 600 graduate students.  Undergraduate majors include Graphic Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Art, Fashion Design, Sustainable Innovation and Energy Engineering, Animation and Digital Effects, and Architecture.  The Roberto Garza Sada Center for Architecture, Art, and Design was designed by Pritzker prize winner and Japanese architect Tadao Andō and was Ando’s first LEED certified building. Students may take classes either in Spanish or English.

Dates

Fall semester begins late July and runs through early December.  Spring semester begins early January and runs through May. 

Cost  

Students pay Willamette tuition and can use their usual funding. Additional scholarships for study abroad are available for this program.
